Just finished watching "Bigger, Faster, Stronger*"

A spectacularly terrifying introspective about America and the contradictory country we live in. Chris Bell, the director has put together a fascinating tale of steroids, the truth, and how they have affected America. Not just about steroids, the movie focuses on America's obsession with looking perfect and being the best which grinds against our moral beliefs. An eye-opener and a well presented story.
The movie has a strong focus on powerlifting and bodybuilding which many of you know hits close to home with my dad. Arnold, Stallone, Louie Simmons, and others featured in the movie were integral parts of my father's life, making this film maybe a little more poignant to me but I guarantee you will love this movie or your money back.

I need to join flash games anonymous. Over the last several months I have become addicted to finding, playing, and beating a variety of web-based flash games. I have searched high and low for the best, most enjoyable time-wasters. I have chosen to feature one of the games because I have nothing else to post about. Maybe this will be a monthly feature on the blog?
If you like games that require lots of keyboard or mouse mashing, click on through to the next blog because this is not for you. I enjoy games that involve a little skill and take thought and effort, probably because I need relief from sitting braindead at school all the time. Car accident yesterday takes the lives of two teenagers in Ogden. Blake Strebel, one of the victims of this incident, helped coach the Weber Lacrosse JV team. He had become good friends with my cousin and I have heard nothing but good about him. My heart goes out to the victims' families. What a tragedy.

On a more cynical note, please read the last part of this article about the individuals that ran from police.

The burglary

Police say two men were spotted burglarizing an Ogden home just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Eyewitnesses gave police a license plate number and physical descriptions of the suspects and their car.

Throughout the day, police searched for that vehicle -- a white Cadillac.

Just after 10 p.m. that same day, an officer spotted the Cadillac in the same general area and tried to pull it over.

The driver, identified as 17-year-old Mark Mora, fled, leading officers on two minute pursuit.

"The Cadillac ran the stop light at 28th and Washington Boulevard and struck a northbound vehicle driven by the two victims," said Lt. Scott Sangberg.

Suspects' families speak out

The mother of Gomez and grandfather of Mora showed up outside of the Ogden police station Thursday morning to speak to the media. They claim no lives should have been lost and the chase should not have even happened.

"If the police had handled this in the intelligent way, it wouldn't have happened," Mora's grandfather, Eddie Mora, said.*What? These kids burglarized a house and are known gang members. Don't blame the police for trying to pull them over.

Gomez's mother, Stacey Mora, expressed her sorrow for the death of the two teens. She said, "I'm so sorry. I just can't imagine how my son feels, I mean, my heart goes out to them. I can't even express how I feel, what they're going through. I'm so sorry. If I could've done anything to change it, I would've."

Stacey says her son was not involved in a burglary and that he likely fled from police because he had been harassed by Ogden police officers in the past. [To hear more from the suspects' families, CLICK HERE.]

Police investigation

Police say both suspects are known gang members and have a lengthy criminal history. However, officers will not say if Mora and Gomez are the two wanted for the initial burglary.

The Utah Highway Patrol is heading up an investigation into the chase and the crash to determine exactly what happened.

The suspects are expected to face numerous charges dealing with reckless driving and vehicular homicide once they are released from the hospital.

I lost my first set of games in quite a while tonight. Hurts inside. I blame it on my protective eyewear I just started wearing.

Win or lose there are very few sports as exciting to play which prodded me to ponder why the game has never become a viable spectator sport.

I decided it's time I contribute a little bit more to the Geeklet, and I figured what a better way to start than by writing about one of the coolest things I've ever purchased: The Mangroomer!!! As some of you might already know, I've been blessed with very healthy hair folicals over my entire body. (There are others in our group of friends that have been equally blessed, by I won't rat them out here.) I'm not necissarily ashamed of the hair, in fact I feel like more of a man for it. Unfortunatly for me I wasn't born in the 70's when it was acceptible to show some hair, and thus have been forced to explore many hair removal methods.

My first attempts at hair removal involed shaving. With age this stopped working as I began to grow hair in areas that I could no longer reach. Shaving also gives you in-grown hairs and I've heard that it makes the hair grow in thicker.

There was also the Nair incident in college where I let some girls Nair my back. Again, this worked, but only with help. I could never look those girls in the eyes again.

Last year I tried waxing my back. Bad idea. It got rid of the hair for like 3 weeks, but I also broke out all over and couldn't go shirtless for two weeks. Net effect: I was hairless for one week, zitty for two. Not an acceptible trade off.

I've also tried some more expensive alternatives like laser surgery. This too did not work. It made the hair less thick, but I guess I was a little too manly for it. (At least that's what I like to tell myself.)

I was about to throw in the towel and accept my fate when I decided to do some research on the internet. I found a couple of crazy shaving contraptions that didn't seem very realistic, and then I stumbled on the the best invention ever: The Mangroomer!!!! You can purchase this thing from most local stores. It's basically an electric hair trimmer attached to an extendible arm. I take this thing to my back once I week and call it good. It's awsome and suggest anyone looking at getting rid of some unwanted hair pick one up.

Until hair comes back in style (which it will if I have anything to do with it,) I'm thankful for the Mangroomer!!!

One of the most awesome toys I owned as a child.

One of the great cartoons of my time was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Looking back I realize that He-Man did have some issues, which I already wrote about in an old post but even with his bleached hair and dark eyebrows he became one of my childhood heroes. Whooping on Skeletor and his minions with help from Cringer, Teela, and Man-at-Arms made for a great cartoon. My parents and the spoiling of their only child (for seven years) let me reap the rewards of many action figures and accessories. Among these accessories was Castle Grayskull with a working drawbridge, and my favorite, Snake Mountain. The toy form of the Villain's lair had a working microphone that let you sound nothing like Skeletor but let you get some wicked screeching feedback when you held the microphone close to the speaker. Watch the commercial for the toy "if you dare... Ha ha ha ha."

When I check blogs I open a tab for every blog I will be looking at so everything can be loaded ahead of time. When there is a music player on a few blogs I get a bunch of mash-ups which usually don't go together very well. I always just turn the sound off when this happens. On the other hand, when someone has a long good post about an interesting topic I kind of like the background music, I think it adds a little umph to the reading. I also sometimes open up certain people's blogs when I am working on other things just to have some different and unique music playing. So here I am contemplating the idea of sharing some good music with everyone out there. I wonder, will people actually stop and listen, will they leave my blog open while they surf the web, or will they turn the sound off like I ofttimes do?

Okay so I got a few playlists ready so I can rotate them and I just discovered that you can set the player to NOT AUTOSTART. Why do so many force their music on us? I am going to give you a choice today. If you choose to accept, scroll down to the bottom push play and enjoy some nice background music while you check your email and snoop around on facebook. Otherwise...leave in silence.

I recently read this Nobel Peace Prize lecture given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. being recommended by a website that I frequent. I believe he was a divinely inspired man, able to understand life and the world around him a little better than most.

"Every man lives in two realms, the internal and the external. The internal is that realm of spiritual ends expressed in art, literature, morals, and religion. The external is that complex of devices, techniques, mechanisms, and instrumentalities by means of which we live. Our problem today is that we have allowed the internal to become lost in the external. We have allowed the means by which we live to outdistance the ends for which we live. So much of modern life can be summarized in that arresting dictum of the poet Thoreau: "Improved means to an unimproved end". This is the serious predicament, the deep and haunting problem confronting modern man. If we are to survive today, our moral and spiritual "lag" must be eliminated. Enlarged material powers spell enlarged peril if there is not proportionate growth of the soul. When the "without" of man's nature subjugates the "within", dark storm clouds begin to form in the world."

I have kind of lost interest in The Office, and 30 Rock just hasn't been fulfilling. Reruns of King of Queens are getting boring and even my favorite, The Family Guy, seems to be losing a little bit of its luster. There just doesn't seem to be much that is worth watching these days. Fortunately Cartoon Network has continued to produce a few shows that can keep me smiling.

Some of the great new Disney movies are coming out in Blu Ray format which just makes them even more wonderful to watch as a family. I know Lucas is really going to appreciate the clear HD quality of Wall-E and Bolt this next year as he watches them on his new PS3 that I bought him for Christmas. I want to apologize to my wife for not telling her about this beforehand but I figure if we have an argument in a public forum she won't be as harsh as she would be if I told her in person.

Lots of girls have a link to this girls blog called 'a little sussy.' After some investigating it looks like she is from Provo but I have no idea why so many girls have links to her site. I have a hard time believing she was that popular in high school.
Anyway, through her site I found a link to a sweet Halloween costume. If I had a little extra time and was actually invited to a Halloween party well in advance, this is the costume that I would have wanted to make.Some mother put this thing together from what looks like mostly cardboard? It is unbelievably unbelievable. A superb piece of work rivaling only d*rocks gumby. Guaranteed this kid was the cool kid in town on October 31st. Here is a video of the transformation.

After smashing my body against the wall a few times in order to get some awesome kill shots I realized something; I am no longer a cripple. Robot Chicken is doing a "Part 2" of their amazingly popular Star Wars parody. If you know a little about Star Wars and don't mind a little crudeness then you absolutely must watch the original first episode. It can be found by clicking here. Of all the funny things I have ever seen this is absolutely in the top 5, followed closely by Tyler's snowboarding accident (click for the beaver rail). Anyway, I can't wait to see what they come up with for this sequel but it is sure to be a good one.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

I watched part of an episode a few weeks back and I thought it was decent. I recently have seen a few other episodes and now I am totally hooked. This computer generated cartoon kicks butt!
The wife may wonder why I have been so peachy lately and here is the answer. Yoda's wise instructions to his clones are changing my understanding of life and teaching me how to more properly face everyday challenges. Thank you ultimate Jedi Master.

A group of us went West of Herriman on the opening day of the hunt this last weekend. Nobody brought a firearm but one of us did shoot a few hunters. I was shot by a doe in the leg but retaliated and shot two bucks in the neck and a fawn in the gut. Don't worry, they all lived.

For under $80, you can own a legitimate Sam Fisher* accessory. According to the reviews you can be in the inky blackness of your bathroom and see EVERYTHING. The image of what you look at is displayed on a small LCD screen that is displayed inside the goggles. It is like having a flashlight that nobody else can see.

I approached my wife, expressing the importance of why I must own this awesome piece of technology but she refused my proposal wanting to know what in the world I would use them for.

Man at Work

After a little brainstorming of how to get back into music I was given a sign, straight from VH1.

I want to start an 80s band.

I briefly talked it over with a friend and we decided it is feasibly plausible that the band would be a huge success. We could play at comic and sci-fi conventions, 20 year high school reunions, and at next year's BARK (although we may need to have it somewhere other than the 'P' lounge).

We first need to start thinking of a name (Norm). We'll need some backup singers (classmates). We need to find someone that is either a drummer or that can set up a repetitive drum beat on a synthesizer (its 80s music, remember). Other than those details I think we are about ready to start jamming. Tell your friends, we will play at weddings, work parties, or any other event that could use a little Toto, Tears for Fears, or Duran Duran.

If everything works out as planned we will need a sketch artist to help make us a video like this. Anyone know why the wrench dudes are so angry? I don't get it, but it still rocks.

Fight Childhood Obesity

What can we do to put the brakes on the pandemic of childhood obesity?

Should we ban video games? Sue fast food restaurants? Turn off our televisions?

No. No. No.

Should we make video games that require exercise? Eat less BigMacs? Make outside games that are fun?

Sure. Probably. Absolutely.

Recently I saw a commercial for these kid friendly RC Helicopters. They look like they could be a blast. Maybe you have seen the ads. These mini helis have laser guns that let you shoot down your buddy's helicopter causing it to spin out of control. I pretty much made up my mind that I needed to get a pair of these for me and my kid but decided to read some reviews first. Disappointment. Reviews say they suck at high altitudes (like where I live), that they are close to impossible to fly, and that the battery life is less than 5 minutes. Come on, that is LAME! Somebody needs to work out the kinks; make the battery life at least an hour and forget laser guns, let me shoot airsoft pellets from my mini-Apache.

Down and Derby

Just this last week, a group of guys from our neighborhood got together to have an open class pinewood derby. Unfortunately, I could not get work off for the event and therefore did not attend. Fortunately, the local EQP recorded some of the highlights which were pretty awesome so I am embedding the video here if you are interested. The hands down winner made a car frame that pretty much just held the battery pack and then attached an RC plane prop backward on the back of the car. He had a remote hanging around his neck and with just a quick flick of the trigger he would zoom past the competition. A few others made prop cars but they were crap.

I know of at least one person that is reading this that had one of these. What an awesome game! I used to play this for hours at my grandma's house. How can such a simple game be so fun? The defense had amazing AI, they would intercept passes, and occasionally stop the run. But with a little practice I got pretty good at running the 4 screen lengths to score a touchdown and hear the little song that will forever be ingrained in my memory. I wonder why Mattel didn't stay in the video game industry, they had such a big hit for a few months.

A magazine called Outside was sitting around at work a for a few days. During some downtime I opened it up to see what the magazine had to offer. I was quickly drawn into an ad for a wristwatch made by Tissot called the T-Touch. The watch is a touchscreen, having many options including a compass, altimeter.... and a few other things that I will let you find out for yourself by visiting their website, found by clicking these words. Don't click just yet because I need to give you directions on how to navigate to the correct spot on their site. After clicking the link you first need to close the female Indy car driver advertisement, then click on the T-Touch box, choose any of the models (I don't think it matters), click the movie strip icon on the right side of the screen (below the watch picture), scroll down until you see the Bambino movie (last one). Take a deep breath and then click it.
Prepare to be mesmerized.

Sweet!

We walk in to Abravanel Hall and the first thing we notice is the huge disparity among the visitors. There are a bunch of middle aged, overweight geeks that still have acne, probably live with their parents, and are wearing t-shirts and jeans. Then there were the season ticket holders; 60-80 year olds in dress clothes looking around in bewilderment wondering if they overheard an older lahad died and gone to Hell. This group was absolutely hilarious to watch, I evendy say "This might get kind of loud, maybe we should leave early." A few members of my geeky generation were garbed in their authentic video game attire, including a sexy Chun-Li that I don't believe had anything under her fishnets.

The show started out perfect. They started playing a video and about 3 seconds into it they shut it off and a guy ran onto stage to talk to the conductor. I think that they weren't quite ready to start. The conductor turns around and mouths to the crowd, holding out his index finger, "one minute." Immediately, without hesitation, a guy about two rows behind us screams out, "take it out and blow in it!"

Classic.

They start out showing a bunch of old school games on a huge screen, like Pong and Asteroid, with the symphony playing music. Then they made their way through a whole bunch of games playing footage highlights while the Utah Symphony and Snow College Choir played the music from these games. Sounds kind of goofy but it was awesome. The highlights for me were definitely Halo (with the electric guitar), Castlevania, World of Warcraft, and Zelda. (Medal of Honor wasn't too bad either)

The concert lacked some of my favorite game music including Mega-Man and Metroid, total bummer, but I figure they must change up the music each year so that people will come back, which means I will definitely be going to Video Games Live again.

Symphony...Video Games...Do I have a choice?

I am a sucker for good music, which yes, includes the classical symphony stuff. Even when I was in high school I loved going to the Utah Symphony and to the Jazz at the Hilton concerts. Well my geekiness has just risen to a new level. I heard about this concert that was going to happen in Utah about 3 months ago and was super excited about it. Well just last week I heard another review about it and so I jumped in and bought tickets for Brynn and me. This Friday the wife and I will be going to Abravanel Hall to hear the Utah Symphony play video game music. I can not even tell you how excited I am to go to this. I will post a review this weekend and let everyone know how it went.

Blu-Ray vs HD DVD

A few days ago another big movie company decided to support Blu-Ray as the new high definition format of the future to replace DVDs. I for one was exited to hear this because I'm the proud owner of a PS3 and besides being capable of playing video games, it also plays Blu-Ray discs. I figure one day I'll get board of playing video games (or have too much responsibility to play them) and it will be nice if I can still use the thing for something more than a cool looking paper weight. I was just wondering if anyone else out there even cares about this so called format war, and if so why? (I don't know anyone else that owns a PS3.)

On a side note, did anyone catch the new American Gladiator television show? I'm still trying to decide what I think about it.

I had some friends in college that needed an idea for a senior project. I gave them a perfect idea but no one believed in me and the idea never came to fruition. I still have not seen a similar product come out yet and I still think it will be a huge hit once someone designs and releases a PDA device that resembles the QB wrist band.

The Orange Box

Okay, so I haven't actually played any of the games in the Orange Box but I will say that I think I was the only one of my friends to play Half-Life and to really get into Counter Strike, both of which are made by the same group that put together the Orange Box. I did however play a flash based remake of the game Portal, available here, which is one of the games in the "Orange" bundle. What a sweet concept. I did talk to someone at work that had played the real Portal game and he said it was one of the coolest games ever. The concept behind it is that you have a gun that shoots out 2 portals. When you go in one, you come out of the other. You can also shoot into one and your bullets come out the other. There are a lot of puzzle-type levels that you have to reason through by using combinations of the portals. I love shooter type games that incorporate puzzles to break up the monotony of button mashing, much like the Zelda franchise. If you personally have played some of the games in the Orange Box, give me a review of what you thought.

Dark Knight

You know what is difficult? To take a movie that I already love and do a remake that I like even more. Well, this may just happen when The Dark Knight comes out in theaters this next summer. I should admit that I expect that this film will be entirely different from the 1989 film starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson but there will undoubtedly be comparisons. This new Batman franchise that emerged with Batman Begins has enthralled everyone. Who didn't love the new badass Dark Knight that stayed away from the soft loving character that was portrayed in many of the previous shows?

I am so glad that Michael Caine is back as Alfred Pennyworth, he is perfect for the part. After reading up a bit on the cast of the Dark Knight, it looks like there may be another villain besides the Joker played by Heath Ledger that will be showing up in this one. Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, which will be played by Aaron Eckhart will make an appearance but rumors are inconclusive if he will actually be fighting against Batman in this movie. Sweet, I can't wait!

The dispute has finally come to an end. Summer of 2010 is how long we have to wait. Peter Jackson and his wife will be executive producers but will not be directing the movies. This scenario will probably be okay and I think that Jackson will have enough involvement to ensure a great film adaptation of Tolkien's marvelous book, The Hobbit.
If done correctly this movie could visually be one of the best movies ever. A lot of CG is going to have to go into this movie to give life to the many diverse characters including Smaug the dragon. Everybodys favorite character, Gollum, is one of the main stars so hopefully Andy Serkis will return to play the creepy hobbit-gone-bad.

So part of me really wanted to have a kid soon and I attribute some of those feelings to my accidental discovery of a Wired magazine affiliate called "Geekdad" which discusses all of the many things geeky that we can buy or create to make our children happier such as these lifelike hands that help the baby feel like it is being held by Thing from the Adam's Family. I have learned how to make all sorts of things from water bottle rockets to mousetrap cars. I am also completely up-to-date on all the new Lego's available thanks to the folks at Geekdad. What a great website.

I recently started looking up clothing available for kids and I hope to get one or more novelty clothing items such as these listed below when our first comes rolling into town. There are some hilarious clothes for infants out there, some had me laughing pretty hard.

About a month ago I also started reading a lot about pregnancy. I know that I know more about what is happening with Brynn's body than she does but I try to act ignorant when she is questioning the changes she is experiencing.
In all it has been pretty exciting to see so many changes and things happening and to get to see this little peanut growing inside my wife's lower abdominal area. I am sure it will become even more crazy the further along we get.
